Hajj is obligatory for every Muslim who has the financial and physical capability to go to and return from Mecca while fulfilling all family needs. It is not compulsory for Muslims who are poor or unable to travel. Hajj is a mandatory duty (Faraz) for all capable Muslims to observe at least once in their lifetime. It is an intricate ritual in Islam.

Umrah is similar to Hajj but can be performed at any time of the year. If someone goes to Mecca and performs all the rituals of Hajj before the day of Arafah, it is considered Umrah Hajj.

The best time to perform Umrah is during the month of Ramadan. During this month, the reward for any good deed is multiplied 70 times. Performing Umrah in Ramadan offers a special opportunity to draw closer to Allah. Additionally, pilgrims can participate in Taraweeh Salah in Mecca, where millions gather simultaneously.

• For those who go for Hajj solely to please Allah, all sins—small or big—are forgiven. Exceptions include sins related to harming others (e.g., hurting someone or not paying creditors). In such cases, forgiveness requires seeking pardon from the affected person.

• Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also said: "Those who perform Hajj spending money to satisfy Allah, Allah will enrich them so they never fall into poverty."

The Government of Bangladesh announces the Hajj package each year. Pilgrims require a Machine Readable Passport (MRP) and online registration. In 2015, a total of 101,758 pilgrims from Bangladesh performed Hajj. Among them, 10,000 went under government management and the rest through private operators. The two government packages cost BDT 3.54 lakh and BDT 2.95 lakh respectively. An additional BDT 10,500 was required separately for Qurbani (sacrifice).

Pilgrims registered online between December 9 and January 21. The first Hajj flight departed Dhaka on September 22. Bangladesh has a dedicated ministry for Hajj affairs and an official website with current information.
